What is an SMS or Short Message Service

What is SMS or Short Message Service

SMS is also known as Short Message Service. This is a fast and simple-to-use communication channel for delivering text message to mobile phones.

SMS doesn’t require internet connectivity and works on all mobile phones, including feature phones smartphones, and IoT devices.

SMS requires mobile network signals or coverage for the messages to be delivered. In the event that there is no mobile network coverage, messages can be stored for up to 48 hours. if the device is out of coverage or signal range, the SMS will be delivered once the user is within the specified range.

A standard SMS message can hold up to 160 characters, or 70 characters if Unicode data coding is used. When more characters are used, messages are broken into parts and are reassembled when they reach the mobile phone. Due to its design, SMS cannot handle media file messages like pictures, videos, or attachments - only text characters can be used.
